Mental Health Counselling – Laura Boileau

What happens in the first session?

In the first session, you will complete three forms (Consent, Intake, and Confidentiality), and begin to describe some of the issues that are standing in the way of living a balanced life. Concerns can include trauma, sexual abuse, anxiety, depression, relationship conflicts, addictions, and shame. In a safe, confidential, and collaborative space, Laura Boileau will help you identify some of your strengths, and you will identify goals that you would like to achieve. Some examples include decreasing anxiety or emotional overwhelm, effectively dealing with conflict, gaining more communication skills, and developing more peace, self-compassion and confidence. During these initial conversations, you will also decide if working with Laura is the best option for you. It is important that you feel comfortable, safe, and connected to your counsellor, and Laura is happy to help you access other services that may be suited to your unique needs.

What happens in the next sessions?

After you identify some of the goals you would like to achieve, Laura works with you to identify the path to your solutions. She believes that every person knows what they need in order to heal, and sometimes we all just need a little extra support. Laura tailors her treatment plans to your individual needs, by drawing from diverse evidence-based practices such as narrative therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, bibliotherapy, mindfulness, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) and with her dog she is also able to provide the option of animal-assisted therapy. The combination of skill-building and emotional support can assist you in making changes to build a more fulfilling life.

How long are sessions?

Sessions are typically fifty minutes once per week. Depending on the individual and the situation, some need more or less support. The number of sessions required also varies, and many people find improvements in their situation after only a few sessions.

Why Animal-Assisted Therapy?

Laura is happy to be able to provide the option of animal-assisted therapy with Nanuq, her dog, at the Gaia Integrative Clinic. In her own life, she has found Nanuq to be a calming, humorous, and compassionate companion. Research has found that the presence of a dog in therapy helps decrease anxiety and depression. Those who have owned a pet know what the research confirms. Dogs help us feel calmer, and their presence lowers blood pressure, increases immune responses, and helps us to connect with the heart.

Will my insurance company cover the cost?

Many private insurance companies provided through workplaces will cover the cost of counselling appointments. Laura is registered with some Employee and Family Assistance Programs. Please contact your workplace to find out what services they cover and how many sessions are covered.
